The world's oldest form of comprehensive healthcare where the focus is always on you and your individual situation.

The Art of Living

Ayurveda is beautiful and intentional healthcare.

Ayurveda is the cycle of nature itself.

Ayurveda makes sense.

Ayurveda takes time.

Ayurveda is right now.

Ayurveda. Pronounced R-U-VEDA, is one of the oldest forms of healthcare in the world and it is around us every single day. Ayurveda translates to the science or knowledge of life. It is understood by most scholars that, as knowledge of Ayurveda spread out from India, it influenced the ancient Chinese system of medicine, Unani medicine, and the humoral medicine practiced by Hippocrates in Greece. For this reason, Ayurveda is often referred to as the "Mother of all healing. (Mark Halpern)

Ayurveda is based on the premise that disease is the natural end result of living out of harmony with our environment. Natural is an important word because Ayurveda understands that symptoms of disease are the body's normal way of communicating disharmony. With this understanding of disease, Ayurveda's approach to healing becomes obvious: to reestablish harmony between self and environment. Once reestablished, the need for the body to communicate disharmony diminishes, symptoms dissipate, and healing is said to have occurred.

Ayurveda understands each person and the disease the person is manifesting as a unique entity. It could be said that no two people are alike, and no two diseases are alike. Therefore, Ayurveda does not approach the cure of a disease as much as it approaches the cure of a person. This approach vastly differs from allopathic medicine. Where allopathic medicine looks for a drug that will cure a statistically significant number of people for a specific condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Ayurvedic medicine looks for a treatment that will cure an individual person of their unique presentation of the disease. Since no disease affects two people in exactly the same way, no two cures are exactly the same. (Mark Halpern)

The Space we live, the Air we breathe, the Fire within us, the Water we drink, and the Earth we plow. These are the fundamentals of Ayurveda: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Once you understand how intricately these elements connect, create and can destroy your health and your life, you can start to make decisions and choices based on what you know will be best for you. Ayurveda is a guide to the road map of your existence.

In addition to the 5 basic elements, there are 3 energetic components that are involved in the human condition. They are called doshas. Dosha can mean many things, depending on where you read it, and I am here to tell you dosha is more than a personal classification of yourself. Way more. Dosha quizes can be informative, but they must be understood before you can utilize their power. And they are quite possibly the most powerful components that make up everything you see, hear, taste, smell and touch. They are the guide that will give you health or take it away. They will serve you, if you listen to them. Or they will destroy you if you misuse them. They are to be revered, like gifts from the divine. And as gifts, they are meant to be utilized for the greater good.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three doshas. We all have a combination of these three that make us who we are, but each person has a varying degree of each, making them unique and very different form the next person. These energies can also be related to the seasons, cycles of nature - of our lives - and of course, food. Vata is the energy of movement and is comprised of Space and Air elements. Pitta is the energy of Transformation and is comprised of Fire and Water. Kapha is the energy of Structure and Stability, comprised of Water and Earth. This, is where it all begins.

Our senses - taste, touch, sight, smell and sound - also play a major role in our health - since these are all ways we "digest" our experiences. These things, just like food, are taken into the body, mind, and are digested, utilized, stored or eliminated. How the body, mind digests or holds onto experiences can have positive or adverse affects on your health.

Ayurveda is holistic living at it's finest and most pure. If you are looking for an option for your own healthcare and that of your family, learn more about how this incredibly complex yet all-too-simple system can and will change your life. Learn the basics and graduate to a level of self-awareness and appreciation that every breath you take become a work of art. Thus, begins, the Art of Living.
